Bitterballen are savory meatballs that are deep-fried and served with mustard. It has a soft filling on the inside usually made with beef, butter, beef broth, spices, and flour; while on the outside, it has a crunchy breadcrumb coating.

Hollandse Nieuwe

For all the fish lovers, Hollandse Nieuwe is something you should try at least once in your lifetime. The raw herring is prepared according to the Dutch tradition and served with raw gherkins and onions.


Stroopwafel is a unique kind of cookie and is known to be the most famous pastry from the Netherlands. It is made from baked batter and is sliced horizontally. Between the two layers of this waffle, sticky syrup and special sweets are filled.


Patat is nothing but the Dutch version of French fries except for the fact that these are thicker than the French fries. It is usually served with a lot of toppings like curry, peanut sauce, mayonnaise, and tomato ketchup.

Snert, also called Erwtensoep, is a thick soup made of celery, split peas, leeks, pork, and carrots. This soup is traditionally eaten during winter with slices of rookworst, which is smoked sausage.


Kroket is a deep fried roll which has crispy outer covering covered with breadcrumbs and has meat ragout filled inside. There are many flavors of kroket like shrimps, goulash, chicken satay, etc.


It is a Dutch style smoked sausage. It is usually eaten along with erwtensoep and stamppot. The taste is mostly like that of a hotdog and is available in every supermarket.


Olieballen are deep fried balls of dough that is made of yeast, salt, flour, baking powder, milk, and eggs. The two varieties that are baked normally are the natural ones and the ones with currents/raisins inside.
