Amsterdam is home to many haunted places, and there are ghostly tales doing the rounds here. The history of the capital city stretches some 800 years back, so there are spooky stories to be heard in connection with the ancient and narrow streets. Here are some of the most haunted places and some urban legends to have lasted across generations in relation to those areas. So if you are a fan of the ghostly and mysterious, or are just looking for some good old fun when on Amsterdam tours, these are the places for you.
The Dam is one of the main town squares in Amsterdam city. As recently as in June 2019, they held the Yoga Day celebrations here. Dam Square is not just a part where the natives and tourists come together to celebrates occasions such as these, and where street artists earn money, but it is also home to tourist attractions such as the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), and the Royal Palace. Just the façade of the palatial building itself seems somewhat scary, and the New Church is gothic. Add to that its horrific past, and Dam Square appears to be the kind place one would think twice walking alone.
There is a different vibe to Dam Square at night. In the times of the Spanish Inquisition, several public executions happened at the Dam and thousands of people accused of witchcraft were burned here. Many think that some tortured souls roam around this place even today. They remind locals and visitors of its gruesome history. The Amsterdam Dungeon, which sits on an old cemetery plot, is situated adjacent to Dam Square and shines lights on this matter.
The Spirit of Black Matthew
Once you visit Amsterdam’s haunted places in your nightly walk, you will perhaps wish to go to a bar and have a drink or two to warm yourselves up. However beware of the ghost of Black Matthew, who they say takes a walk at night. This creepy tale dates all the way back to the 1200’s when a shady person named Matthew, a highwayman, a magician and thief spent days gambling and using trickery and dark magic to make sure he would invariably win. His luck ran out one fateful day when he came face to face with his match in the form of devil.
Today, Matthew’s ghost roams the narrow streets hoping for some good fortune. You better be on the lookout because he is rumored to appear all over Amsterdam.
